This took me months to read, but I pushed on, wanting to see how the history was portrayed. The writing was fairly formal, & the "love interest" wasn't enough to entertain. Well, probably not meant to entertain, but to demonstrate how enemies can come to respect each other's beliefs--in contrast to the Spaniards who only wanted to impose their beliefs & call anything else devil worship. The setting is Hopi lands at Oraibi prior to the 1680 Pueblo Indian Revolt and after the 1599 butchering at Acoma Pueblo. A Hispanic commander arrives with maybe 20 soldiers at Oraibi to seek out treasures for the crown, prove his own worth, & support a Franciscan in his mission to build a church and make converts. The Hopi are basically forced to spend time working on the church to the neglect of their crops & ceremonies. ( )
