This is a good, well illustrated book that is intended for young adults, but is also good for adults who want more than a Wikipedia or encyclopedia article, but less that a full biography. It is also a good pictorial supplement to Timothy Egan's Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher, which is a full-length adult biography. It has more pictures, and it also has family pictures, which are quite interesting. There are many books of Curtis photographs, and two magnificent examples are Native nations : first Americans as seen by Edward S. Curtis and Sacred legacy : Edward S. Curtis and the North American Indian. These are both apparently from the collection of Christopher Cardozo, and are different enough to both be worth viewing. The books are extremely large, almost unwieldy, but the size does justice to Curtis's amazing works and his subjects. ( ) Quick read, with fast-moving biography of the great photographer's life, and some of his beautiful and often illuminating photographs, but this is barely a sip at his work. A nice book for beginning with, but there are others that are far more detailed. I hadn't realized that this was a YA book, and as such it's a very good one, crisp prose, good pix, and quick to finish. Recommended for YA who are interested in American history and/or history of photography and/or Victorian/Edwardian anthropology as re. American Indian populations. Not at all technical, though rather informative in spots. NOTE: There is currently a new book out that utilizes almost the same title (SHORT NIGHTS OF THE SHADOW CATCHER) but is an adult history, authored by Timothy Egan, isbn 0618969020 Quick read, with fast-moving biography of the great photographer's life, and some of his beautiful and often illuminating photographs, but this is barely a sip at his work.
