De pareils enfantillages, ça la faisait rigoler. Il fallait une artillerie autrement plus lourdes, pour lui faire peur. Elle ne se lèverait la nuit que si les tanks venaient dans sa cour en arrachant la clôture. On ne sait jamais, ça pourrait bien arriver (…) si la guerre éclatait. Cela elle ne le souhaitait pas, plus, pas maintenant, elle voulait mourir d’abord.

J’avais acheté ce livre peu de temps après sa sortie en France, car il avait alors fait grand bruit (à l’échelle d’un livre, qui plus est de littérature étrangère, il ne faut pas exagérer…) et le sujet et le lieu, que je rencontre rarement dans mes lectures, m’avaient attirée.
Je savais que le livre était violent, mais j’ai tout de même eu du mal à lire certains passages très crus auxquels je n’étais pas préparée. Mais ces scènes ne sont jamais gratuites et m’ont permis de me confronter, par pages interposées (ce qui reste donc une situation somme toute bien confortable), à des sujets que je préfère en général ne pas voir, c’est tellement moins dérangeant de détourner le regard.
La construction romanesque du roman, avec ses amours cachés et ses rapprochements entre génération ne m’a pas convaincue, et m’a paru un peu trop improbable, plus digne d’un Dumas du XIXème siècle que d’un roman bien noir du XXIème siècle. Mais l’artificialité de l’intrigue ne m’a pas dérangée plus que cela, tant il est évident que le propos de l’autrice n’est tout simplement pas là. En faisant se télescoper deux périodes de l’histoire récente de l’Estonie (mais aussi plus généralement de l’URSS), au moment de la Seconde Guerre mondiale où le pays tout juste indépendant se retrouve à nouveau sous la coupe d’un de ses grands voisins, puis de l’autre, puis au moment de l’effondrement de l’URSS, c’est la place de la femme dans ces quotidiens instables qui est en discussion, et même peut-être plus précisément la place du corps de la femme. La façon dont il est utilisé comme une arme de destruction, de peur, de domination. Mais aussi, c’est plus ténu mais j’ai cru le lire entre les lignes, la façon dont, malgré tout, des femmes vont être capables, non de pardonner, non de passer outre, mais de se relever malgré tout, de faire leurs choix, et peut-être parfois même de prendre les hommes à leur propre jeu et de faire de ce corps une arme à leur service et non plus au service de l’autre.
Je ne lirai pas tous les jours des livres comme cela, mais je crois que je suis contente que mes pas de lectrice aient croisé celui-là, car si j’ai trouvé la lecture éprouvante, elle m’a fait découvrir un coin d’Europe que je ne connaissais pas et des instants de l’histoire plus ou moins récente sur lesquels j’avais pris garde de ne pas trop me pencher. Ce n’est pas un livre qui rend très optimiste quant à la nature humaine, ni qui rend enviable le sort des petites nations coincées entre de grands voisins, nul n’en sort indemne. Les compromissions semblent indispensables pour survivre, mais les allégeances fluctuantes semblent rendre toute idée de vie paisible illusoire.

En una deshabitada zona rural de Estonia, en 1992, recobrada la independencia de la pequeña república báltica, Aliide Truu, una anciana que malvive sola junto al bosque, halla en su jardín a una joven desconocida, agotada y desorientada. Se trata de Zara, una veinteañera rusa, víctima del tráfico de mujeres, que ha conseguido huir de sus captores y ha acudido a la casa de Aliide buscando una ayuda que necesita desesperadamente. A medida que Aliide vence la desconfianza inicial, y se establece un frágil vínculo entre las dos mujeres, sale a flote un complejo drama de viejas rivalidades y deslealtades que han arruinado la vida de una familia.

The story opens in 1992, with Zara, a young Russian woman, collapsing in the yard of Aliide, an older woman who lives alone on a farm in the Estonian countryside. Each woman is wary of the other, and it is clear each is hiding something. A third main character, Hans, Aliide’s brother-in-law, appears via diary entries. Hans was a freedom fighter in the “Free Estonia” movement in the 1940s-1950s. The Soviet authorities were hunting for him. The novel starts at a critical juncture, then flashes back to show how each participant reached this point.

This novel depicts the Soviet occupation of Estonia, which started in 1940 and continued after the German occupation during WWII. It also portrays the time period just after Estonia regained independence in 1991, and the associated social upheavals. These time periods are important to keep in mind to get the full impact of the story.

It is a complex mix of jealousy, torture, sex trafficking, collaboration, survival, betrayal, guilt, and Estonian history. I found it a disturbing read, but effective in capturing the mental, political, and social issues that accompany a despotic regime (in this case, Stalin). Be forewarned there are scenes involving sexual abuse which are described in explicit detail. Sofi Oksanen is a Finnish-Estonian writer. She has written a powerful novel of a period and place in history with which many (especially western) readers will not be familiar. The ending, and really the entire book, provides lots of opportunity for discussion.

“There would always be chrome-tanned boots, some new boots would arrive, the same or different, but a boot on your neck nevertheless. The foxholes had been closed up, the shell casings in the woods had tarnished, the secret dugouts had collapsed, the fallen had rotted away, but certain things repeated themselves.”

Interesting to learn more about the Russian occupation of Estonia and also about the appalling sex trafficking industry. I listened to this as an audiobook and it did become confusing as it jumped between time periods. By the end, I was totally confused. I need someone to read the text and explain the ending to me now. ( )

An elderly woman living alone in the Estonian countryside one day discovers a overly made up, disheveled young woman in her front yard, and she takes her in despite her misgivings. A photo the girl carries will show that they are actually aunt and niece, but this is not revealed to the woman early on. Zara is a sex-traffic victim who has fled from her keepers and seeks a place to hide. Aliide is a bit of folksy, grumpy, old woman who has her own resentments and shame to live with.

Moving back and forth in time, this story of war and family are woven together in a storied tapestry of the past, the present, of obsession, compromise, complicity, resentment, danger, survival, and love…the reader cannot help being pulled in and wrapped up in it. And despite the awards this book has won and been nominated for, it’s not a book for everyone. The translated prose is easy to read, the story mesmerizing, but the movement back and forth in time may irritate some readers, while others may understand how that movement in the story is weirdly (and wonderfully) akin to what a soundtrack is for a movie. I think it’s an important novel about history, suffering and what it means to survive such history. ( )
