Bernice, for no readily apparent reason (The New Adventures seem to struggle with getting her involved in stories), is recruited to join an uninteresting group of characters in investigating an uninteresting spaceship. Everyone aboard finds themselves transforming into a different group of uninteresting people as the result of an uninteresting plot by a ridiculously over-the-top villain, who still manages to be completely uninteresting. Also, people fail to investigate or even be worried by things that should concern them, mainly because the whole plot would probably collapse. Justin Richards seems to be asleep at the wheel here, and I only avoided joining him thanks to some judicious skim-reading. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

I feared at first that The Medusa Effect, in which Benny and a bunch of others are sent on an expedition to find a lost spaceship (the Medusa), was going to end up in a similar place to this year's Deep Time, in fact it ends up much closer to the Buffy episode "I Only Have Eyes For You" (which, interestingly, also dates from 1998) in that Benny's expedition find themselves being taken over by the personalities of the Medusa crew and re-enacting their fate. I thought it was well enough done, though has few links to other continuity. The central third is particularly strong. ( )
