Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) is considered by many to be the most influential typographer of the twentieth century. A leading voice of the modernist movement, Tschichold oversaw the redesign of the Penguin and Pelican paperbacks in the late 1940s and devised for them a standardized set of typographic rules. The classical type designs of his late career qualify him as perhaps the first typographic postmodernist. Active Literature, an in-depth study of Jan Tschichold's modernist period, is based on extensive archival research that uncovered a wealth of new photographs of his design work. Author Christopher Burke presents a full portrait of the designer's career and puts into context Tschichold's own account of his life and work. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"Jan Tschichold (1902-1974) has good claims to being the key typographer of the twentieth century : one of the leaders of the modernist movement of the 1920s, and, in the classical typography of his later career, perhaps the first typographic postmodernist. Active literature is a close study of his modernist years, based on extensive research in the archives and introducing a wealth of fresh reproductions. Burke lays particular emphasis on Tschichold as a propagandist of New Typography, through his many books and articles, showing that he was as much an explainer as a designer. The subject comes to life in the letters written between colleagues across Europe in the turbulent years of the Nazi ascent to power. The book is introduced with air essay by Robin Kinross, discussing Tschichold's present reputation, and is rounded off with a selection of key texts by the subject."--BOOK JACKET.
