Picking up this book, I'd been on a mission. The book fair was coming up, and I'd only read one of the 20 or so books I'd bought last year. I was on a roll and confident I could finish them all before the book fair bent and broke my will to not buy anymore. I opened the book, made it to page 16, and promptly abandoned my ambitions.

It was so boring. It was beyond boring!!! I tried to stick with it, honestly, but it bored me to tears. When the book fair finally arrived, I settled on buying far less than I had the year before, hopefully being more critical of them than I was in picking up Lucas. ( )

My daughter reccomended this book to me, and I'm so glad she did. When she was reading it we often had the following discussion:

Me: It's time to come to dinner.
Her: *eyes devouring the page* Uh-huh
Me: Really. You need to stop reading and eat.
Her: Uh-huh.
Me: Now!
Her: *reluctantly puts the book down*

I'm more sympathetic now. Kevin Brooks does such a good job of sucking you in and keeping the tension high throughout the whole of this book that putting it down to get some work done was a very difficult thing. I really enjoyed this story and I'm glad he doesn't dumb down the fear/danger for younger readers. ( )

No matter how many times I read this book, I still hope for the ending to change. I know it never will, I know what happens is inevitable and will leave me in tears, but I still read with hope.

This book is haunting. Once you read it, it will stay with you forever. A hot summer day will make you think of it. Seeing swans will make you think of it. Seeing kids trying to grow up too fast will make you think of it. A wild storm will make you think of it. You'll never get away from this book, you'll never stop thinking about.

So that's what I did. I cried myself a story. And this is it.

This book is violent and real and heartbreaking and shocking and moving. And it is easily one of my favourite books of all time. It is a roller-coaster ride which ends in despair, despite knowing what's coming. ( )

"Will resonate with teen readers."

"An edge-of-the-seat story that has overtones of classics such as THE OX BOW INCIDENT and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD. There's a purity to [Brooks's] style that pervades the narrative, which is by turns sweet, taut, and terrifying...Teens make pick it up for its sheer intensity, but once they put it down, they'll ponder its meanings."

"An ambitious, intricately crafted tale of love and resurrection...its powerful combination of big ideas and forthright narrative makes this novel likely to linger in the readers' minds."

This beautifully written allegorical tale by the author of Martyn Pig stays with readers long after it ends. Set on an isolated island off Great Britain, the novel has it all-love, hate, sin, forgiveness and redemption, and a memorable title character. As Caitlin, 15, relates the events of the previous summer, she recalls with crystal clarity the moment when the mysterious boy appeared out of nowhere. His arrival precipitates a series of incidents that exposes the ugly underbelly of the seemingly idyllic setting. The writing is extraordinarily lyrical. This is a powerful book to be savored by all who appreciate fine writing and a gripping read. (From School Library Journal review May, 2003) (Gr. 9+)
