This book is a brilliant portrait of Argentine history between the first foundation of Buenos Aires and the years following the collapse of Peron's second presidency. By focusing on each determining event, the author not only analyzes a particular historical moment but also sheds light on present times. History, in last instance, is a useful instrument for understanding the present reality of every country. In this comprehensive, pleasant and easy to read book, Felix Luna offers all his wisdom for the reader to reflect upon the constitution and the development of a complex -and many times contradictory- but very interesting society. A Short History of the Argentinians should be read by every person wishing to understand the basis upon which the peculiarity of Argentina and its inhabitants is founded. Whether you are a student, a teacher, a businessman or businesswoman eager to participate in any of the countless activities this country offers you, you will find all you want to know about Argentina in one book.… (altro)

The standard history fare is excellently summarized in “A Short History of the Argentinians” (2000), by respected Argentine historian Felix Luna. The biggest limitation of the book is that it deals with the history until the collapse of the Peron government in 1955, and thus omits Peron’s return in 1972, and more recent, equally significant events like the military coup of 1976, the subsequent dirty war, and the change-over to a democratic system, with all its flaws.

It does what it says on the tin: it's a short, readable history of Argentina from colonial times to the present, and it's a good place to start a study of Argentine history. There's was rather too information about political maneuvering during the book's latter third for my taste, but the author's refreshingly honest about which aspects of history he chose to focus on. The book reveals that the country's current conceptions about nationhood and governing appeared on the scene rather later than one might expect. Useful, though it does, for reasons unknown, omit Argentina's experience under the 1976-83 dictatorship, which seems a puzzling choice. ( )
