The author writes about the antebellum South in a way that makes you feel you are there, and helps you understand the times and the people and the turmoil that was taking place at that time (1858-1860). Bostonian Abby Banes has married the much older Elli Allyn and has moved to a Georgia plantation along the seacoast, where she finds herself the mistress. Although her husband loves her, she finds herself alone much of the time and with very little to talk about when she is with Elli. Her housekeeper, Rosa Moon, doesn't seem to want to get to know her mistress and Abby is lonely. When her husband dies and she becomes a widow, her life changes. She gets to know Rosa Moon, they become friends and Abby also learns how her rice plantation is run, thanks to the friendship she starts with Thad, her overseer. But Abby doesn't like owning slaves and she wants to somehow free them. Easier said than done. This was very well written and showed the whole slave issue in a different viewpoint than some stories I have read. I appreciated this story and am glad I read it and sad that there will be no sequel, to tell the rest of the story of Abby and Thad. I have read many of Eugenia Price's books and her style of writing and her love for the South will be missed. I've had this book for a number of years (in fact, I found I had 2 copies of it!) but have just gotten around to reading it. I met Eugenia Price when I was in 8th grade, after my class read the St. Simons trilogy. I've been a fan of hers ever since. This is the last book she wrote before passing away; it is obviously meant to be continued. The main characters are fictitious, but many of the supporting characters are not. As always, the book is well researched. It takes place in Darien in the late 1850s, in the time leading up to the Civil War. Abby is from the North but inherits her husband's rice plantation and slaves when he dies. She tries to come to terms with her discomfort at owning slaves and the possibility that freeing them might not be as easy as she thought. She also falls in love with her handsome overseer. They are waiting for the proper time to marry, the beginning of the Civil War, and the answer to what to do with their slaves. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

A new edition of Eugenia Price's final novel, presented by Turner Publishing From one of America's best-loved storytellers, The Waiting Time is an ambitious, romantic, historically rich epic, sure to delight new and loyal readers alike. Spirited Abigail Banes dreams her newly married life coastal Georgia will be lived amid spreading magnolia trees, where lovers walk and whisper along blossom-lined paths. But her dreams are shattered when a fatal accident claims her husband, Eli, leaving her sole proprietor of their rice plantation--and the slaves that work the magnificent land. Forging a new life for herself, Abby finds a new identity--as a feminist before her time, and abolitionist before there is a way to free slaves. As she struggles with her inheritance, Abby finds herself turning to her new overseer, Thaddeus Greene. And, at a time when love is forbidden to her, Abby realizes Thad is destined to take Eli's place in her heart. Eli could never have known that by hiring Thad he had given a lasting gift to his beloved wife--for from the moment Abby gazes into Thad's penetrating gray eyes, she knows she will never be alone again. With The Waiting Time, Ms. Price felt she had found the perfect title for her book, as it captures the dual strands of this entrancing story: the wait for the beginning of the Civil War and for the end of the time custom dictates Abby must wait before she and Thad can be together. This compelling novel, which brings a human face to a nation braced for Southern secession, embraces the unrelenting passion that marks an incredible love story.
