Satellite images and aerial photography have given humankind a powerful way to capture the Earth’s geography and structure in more detail than ever before. This atlas is a tremendous resource for many reasons. Not only are the maps incredibly legible and detailed, but there are numerous pages that extend the descriptions and details of highlighted geographic areas. The atlas also included introductory support for how to use the book, as well as an excellent collection of tables, charts, and graphs including everything from our solar system to items like plate tectonics, mountains, volcanoes, climate, and weather patterns. Comparative samples of population, consumption, economics and energy are also featured. There is even a section with countries and flags of the world. The book is full of colorful graphics and depictions that are user-friendly. Both upper-year elementary students and high school students would benefit from this resource and it could be best used in social studies classrooms. However, with all of the extra information included, it would lend itself well to the study of earth sciences. I enjoyed the historical information features and the engaging ‘question-and-answer’ format for some sections. There is also an activity guide available that accompanies the atlas. Overall, a superb resource! ( )
