One of the few books to consider the very personal, yet also public, matter of married Jewish women covering their hair, Hide and Seek explains the law, considers the customs surrounding the practice, and includes the voices of women from around the world who are moved by the nature of this challenging observance. I read this anthology very slowly over several months and really enjoyed it. While not Jewish, I am a Torah Observant believer in Yeshua and have felt led to cover my head, off and on, for about 11 years. It was so interesting to read about the different reasons women have for the decisions they've made about covering.

I actually stopped for awhile as I didn't find this command directly in Torah. However, I do see the modesty benefits when I do cover---it also helps remind me of how I am to exhibit a meek and quiet spirit. I've recently begun covering again and have been sewing coverings to sell in my Etsy shop.

One of the chapters I really liked was chapter 10: Why I Wear a Hat. The author talks about how her covering identifies her to people with similar convictions. I feel this same way about the covering, as well as the tzitziot. ( )

A balanced look at Orthodox Jewish women who do and don't cover their hair for a wide variety of reason. Each section really delves into each woman's private story her life her spirituality. ( )
