I have to be honest and admit I wasn't looking forward to reading this one. Overall, on first appearances it seems to be intended for a very young audience and I wasn't holding out much hope that there would be any real depth to the book beyond "who our besties will be this week." I ended up being VERY surprised with this one.
The main character, Julep, is a typical, awkward 11 year old who is desperately trying to fit in. She envies the other kids in her class at school, all of whom have cell phones, SE (self expression) tees, and manageable hair while her mother is trying so hard to make her realize she doesn't need to be like everyone else. I loved how the author really has shown the struggle of every school-aged girl to fit in while trying to be independent and true to themselves and the dysfunctional relationship we often have with our mothers at that age.
The book is actually going on my "must purchase" list for when my daughter is a little older. It was cute, but not too cute, relevant to today's preteens, and written in a manner that will draw the young reader into the story. ( )
