I like this book because it is informational. It explains the process of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly in various stages. The book states that caterpillars hatch from eggs and eat a lot. The book also states that caterpillars grow out of their skin and form cocoons. The text has corresponding labeled images to further understanding. These images are helpful. ( )

This book emphasizes a process and is great for introducing the life cycle of a caterpillar. It touches on the transformation and eating habits of caterpillars to become moths or butterflies. This book is also great for differentiating between a type of species. It recognizes several types of caterpillars that become the reciprocal butterfly or moth.

Caterpillars by Robyn Green is a great guided reading book to use with students. The predictable and repetitive sentence structure can help students as they read and the labeled diagrams are also useful to help students make connections between the print and the images. Teachers can use this text during guided reading as they observe the strategies their students use while they read.

Caterpillars is a children’s book that focuses on the introduction and teachings of what makes up a caterpillar, and how they develop throughout their lifespan. A great use of a guided reading for children in the early elementary grade level K-1 as a way to ease into the practice of reading fluency and accuracy, as well as reading comprehension. Not to mention, this guided reading is extremely helpful for English Language Learner students who may practice their reading and hone their reading skills. ( )

This text will be a great guided reading tool because it shows the natural steps of a caterpillar's life as a science topic. The vocabulary can enhance my student's word bank and the imagery of the larvae, cocoon and butterfly can really draw the students' attention as they read it for themselves. It can be tied to life cycles that people have to go through sometimes in order to arrive at a point in their lives. Patience and endurance is something we can all learn from the caterpillar.
