Set in 1901, this book contrasts a "what if" future with the strict morals of 20th century Melbourne. Fox and BC are two young warriors who have committed treason by hijacking their general's time machine and gone back to 1901 to stop the bombing of the first Australian parliament. This bombing has lead to the development of a future society based on war. Emily and Daniel are out boating on the Yarra River when their craft overturns and they are saved by Fax who pretends to be Norwegian because he speaks English in very clipped sentences. Emily and Daniel soon stumble on the truth and help the injured BC by running reconnaisance missions to discover when the "Germans" are going to plant bombs in the ceiling of the Exhibition Buildings. (Site of the first Australian Parliament) They are helped by local scam artist Barry the Bag, and Muriel, daughter of a local bohemian artist. A good idea which is delivered in patches - Fox's character completely disappears in the second half of the book, Emily suddenly rebels against all her upbringing and throws herself at BC only to discover BC is a girl in disguise. Daniel's thoughts on the whole matter are the subject of a couple of chapters and then the rest of the book concentrates on Emily! This should have been edited a bit more thoroughly before publication and I think the cover is average. (The sex stuff is not handled well and it therefore rates a Yr 10 + tag too.)
