I give it a three star rating because he includes so many women who acted in westerns. Had he not written this volume, many of these names may have been forgotten in time.
However, the book is not well written and poorly edited. There are many typos of which some are so blatant that it would appear no one read the text before it went to press. There is some repetition in stories told by the women which is to be expected as many of them worked together and in a surprising number of cases, shared accommodation at times. He frequently uses quotations from the interviews he conducted with each woman which puts their memories in their own words but sometimes his use of or lack of punctuation makes separating the quotes from his text very difficult. In some instances, the quotes would have made more sense if they had been edited for clarity. I had to read some several times to figure out what or who the actress was referring to.
There are some gossipy bits. Don "Red" Barry was not a pleasant man to work with while the Maynard Brothers, Buck Jones, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, Duncan Renaldo, Bill Elliott, Hoot Gibson, Andy Devine. Rod Cameron and most of the other cowboy heroes were real gentlemen. Allan Lane was too full of himself to even share the space in front of the camera. Audie Murphy was a loner with a bad temper as was Steve McQueen
Most of the women worked in B Westerns and and some TV Westerns and had to be alive when the book was being researched. However there are a few who were well known for their other work of made feature westerns. Two of my favourites are Julie Adams and Maureen O'Hara. Debra Paget was one of three siblings to work in films but her claim to fame came about because she had a part in one of the most influential westerns ever made, Broken Arrow. Of course Dale Evans is well known as Roy Rogers wife and fellow performer in film & TV. Some such as Gail Davis, Gale Storm, Jan Shepard and Collen Gray were well known from their work in TV westerns.
Includes pictures of each woman many of which are studio stills taken during their career. ( )
