In 1924, George Mallory and his companion Andrew Irvine disappeared during a valiant bid to reach the world's highest summit. In May 1999 Mallory's body was found, partly resolving the riddle of whether they succeeded in their bid, 29 years ahead of Hillary and Tenzing. Peter and Leni Gillman assess the motives and goals of this inspirational yet complex figure, whose life was dominated by his two conflicting passions: his love for his wife Ruth, and Everest - forbidding, unclimbed, 'the wildest dream', as he called it. Drawing on family letters and helped by surviving members of the family, Peter and Leni Gillman present a powerful and affecting portrait of a man torn between competing desires, and the fatal choice he ultimately made.… (altro)

what I expected to be an audio turned out to be a documentary.

very impressive ...meeting Mallory and family and seeing a replication of the 1924 climb contrasted with Conrad Anker's 1999 climb.
the discovery of Mallory's body was intriguing
The question, however, still exists...did he make it to the top, leave the photo of his wife and die on the descent....?

My interest in GM is piqued.
I'll read another account....perhaps Because It's There: The Life of George Mallory (Dudley Green)
He was quite a compelling character.. ( )

Well researched biography, interesting to learn he was not only a mountaineer & climbed Everest but was in the Bloomsbury Set. ( )

The public debate as to whether George Mallory and Sandy Irving actually reached the summit of Everest in 1924 - and if they did was this a successful attempt as they died before they left the mountain - was re-opened in 1999 when Mallory's body was found on Everest. This biography explores the complex man behind the headlines, the writer, teacher, husband and father, who was friend of poets - Rupert Brooke and Robert Graves - and on the fringes of the Bloomsbury Group. It also goes some way in explaining why, after taking part in two previous expeditons to Everest, as well as one previous attempt on the Summit during the 1924 Expedition, Mallory decided to push on for the summit in his last, fatal, climb. This is a fascinating account which tries to reach the truth behind the headlines. ( )
