Beth Frasier's goal in life was to get good grades in high school and get into a good college, not to become a vampire. But she had no choice, nor did she have a choice when she turned her boyfriend Clayton into a vampire. Now, besides working on her grades, she is trying to find her "master" since the only way she can became human again is to kill him. She's also being hounded by a group of vampires who want her to invent a formula that will allow vampires to go out in the sun without being harmed. As if that weren't enough, someone is trying to kill her and she suspects it may be Clayton. Even worse, midterms are coming up!

"Good Ghouls Do", the sequel to The Good Ghouls' Guide to Getting Even, is an enjoyable young adult novel. Despite the premise, the novel is mostly humorous. Beth is a nicely done character, who misses the things we take for granted like being able to go out for a hamburger and fries. Her friends Jenny and Clayton are also nicely done, although I'd like to see Jenny be a little bit more involved in the story besides being Beth's sidekick. Author Julie Kenner does a pretty good job with the vampire aspects although she sometimes stretches things too far. For example, she has Beth's parents be divorced and workaholics so that they don't notice the changes in her, but that didn't work for me. In fact, I was getting annoyed that most of the adults in the novel remain clueless, but towards the end Kenner does a good job of explaining why. She doesn't do as good a job of explaining how Beth is able to get blood to drink in the beginning part of the novel, surely hospitals have strict rules as to who is allowed to take blood. I was left with a few questions at the end of the book, but this novel is part of a series and perhaps the questions will be answered in future books. The end of the book feels a bit rushed, even the cliffhanger, which could have been a bigger bombshell if written better.

Flaws aside, "Good Ghouls Do" is a pretty good book. ( )

When we last left Beth Frasier, she had unfortunately let her guard down and was turned into a vampire. Beth was trying to become human again by having her creator destroyed, but while killing the wrong vampire she gets herself into a pickle by deciding to save her boyfriend from dying -- by changing him, too.

Now Beth is back and ready to not only turn herself but also her boyfriend, Clayton, into humans once again. That is, hopefully, before Clayton decides that he needs to kill Beth.

Of course, not everything is going well since the head cheerleader, Tamara, is still getting on Beth to decode the prophecy, which tells them how to walk during the day. Kevin, the college guy, is beginning to hit on Beth... Who can resist a college guy who is also a slayer? Little incidents begin to happen which leave Beth in situations where she is almost dead. Her parents, who can't stand each other, are beginning to talk once again. Clayton is beginning to be very secretive and just may be plotting against Beth. And so Beth just possibly may not have a date to the dance.

What totally puts a setback in Beth's plans on solving all of these problems is when she discovers two secrets that can, and will, change her life forever.

Being a teenage girl isn't so great, especially when you are a teenager and everything is against you. Yet, Beth Frasier still finds time to be funnier and wittier than ever. GOOD GHOULS DO is the perfect follow-up to Julie Kenner's previous novel, THE GOOD GHOULS' GUIDE TO GETTING EVEN.

And the HUGE cliffhanger at the end only leaves the reader wanting more... and hopefully there is more. ( )

It took me a long time to buy "Good Gouls Do" even though I fell in love with "A Good Ghouls Guide To Getting Even". That is due to the fact that a trip to Julie Kenner's website revealed no plans for a third installment. She said she hopes one day to finish Beth's story but there are no real plans to do so. I hate stories that end in a cliffhanger about as much as I hate TV shows that end on a cliffhanger and then aren't renewed for the next season. Yeah, that's bad. But being a huge Kenner fan and also a Beth fan, I had to pick up this book. I am both tremendously glad and sad that I did. This story picks up right after the first one. Beth is a vampire who is also in line to be her class valedictorian. Due to being tricked by the football team and forced to drink blood, Beth is now a blood drinker. Someone out there is her master and Beth needs to find out who it is. If she can kill her master, than she can become human again. She has to do all this while trying to avoid getting staked because someone is after her. It may be her boyfriend Clayton, who she had to turn recently to keep him from dying. Since she is his master, killing her may be Clayton's only hope of becoming human again. This easy to read story literally flew by...every page is packed with action and Beth's adorable wit. This is a strong, fun teenager, and a great example for pre-teens and teens to look up to. For adults like myself, it is still a fun read. The sad part is having to wonder how Beth's story will end. "Good Ghouls Do" left a ton of unanswered questions. It would be nice if Kenner could find some way to wrap these up? If there is no chance for a final book, perhaps she could work Beth's conclusion into a short story in an anthology or something. ( )

Beth is still a vampire after killing the the vamp she thought was her master. Now she has to find out who her master really is, and continue to try to discover the formula that will allow vamps to walk in the sun. Oh, and there are "traditional vamps" who are trying to kill her and she still has to keep her grades up. All in all, she is a very busy gal.

This series is turning out to be way fun. There is action and romance, a smart main character with a group of friends anyone would love to have. I am looking forward to the next one. ( )
