Somehow Charlie Holmberg books are all identifiable as being Charlie Holmberg books. They are kind of cozy fantasy with sometimes a bit of low stress sex thrown in. This book is no different. The book blurb tells the whole story. Lark joins the Ogres. Learns from them. They learn from her. She overcomes hardships and wins the heart of a gentle, kind, young ogre and they walk off into the sunset together. Nice book. No stress. I received a review copy of this book from the publishers through NetGalley.com. I loved this one... I didn't know that this book would resonate with me the way that it did, but I'm glad it did! Lark is a bit naïve, and definitely suffers needlessly at times. However, I appreciated her willingness to respect those around her, even when the trollis culture was radically different from everything she knew. I wish some aspects of this book had been fleshed out more, but I definitely would read it again, flaws and all. (Also, I didn't expect to fall for Azmar the way I did- dang!) A lovely stand-alone novel. Great world-building with interesting characters. Some inconsistencies with character comparative sizing, but nothing that can't be overlooked. The lack of gratitude from the council at two different points was a little too convenient, but that's just my opinion. Overall, a well-worth read. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
"Seven years on the run from her abusive father, and with no hope of sanctuary among the dwindling pockets of human civilization, Lark is out of options. Her only leverage is a cursed power: she can thrust fear onto others, leaving all threats fleeing interror. It's a means of survival as she searches for a place to call home. If the campfire myths of her childhood are true, Lark's sole chance for refuge could lie in Cagmar, the city of trolls-a brutal species and the sworn enemies of humanity. Valuing combat prowess, the troll high council is intrigued. Lark could be much more useful than the low-caste humans who merely labor in Cagmar. Her gift makes her invaluable as a monster slayer to fight off the unspeakable creatures that torment the trolls' hanging city, suspended from a bridge over an endless dark canyon. Lark will do anything to make Cagmar her home, but her new role comes with a caveat: use her power against a troll, and she'll be killed. Her loyalty is quickly put to the test when she drawsthe hatred of a powerful troll who loathes humankind. Still, she finds unexpected friendship in the city and, even more surprisingly, love. But if everything else doesn't undo her, being caught in the arms of a troll surely will. Now in the fight of herlife, Lark has a lot to learn-about her past, about trust and hope when all seems lost, and above all, about the extraordinary power of fear itself. I admit I wasn’t a fan of all of this author’s previous works, but this hit in all the right places for me. Beautifully done romance between Lark and Azmar, and love the friendships she formed along the way. Wonderful worldbuilding with the trolls’ world. Each character had a distinct personality, and Lark was a relatable protagonist.
Bonus that the cover is beautiful and there’s a HEA (or HFN?).
Only qualm I have is that the main conflicts seemed to come too quickly and too late, and resolved just as fast. I do hope there is a sequel though, because I’d love to hear more about Lark and Azmar’s adventures! ( )
