This book is a roadmap for how to live your best life based on the wisdom of Norse gods, as gleaned from myth and lore. Delving into primary sources, the values, priorities, and goals of the people and their gods are revealed. Norse Paganism is rooted in ancient practices and beliefs. It thrives today, but not without adaptations. The difference is not a shift in core values. Instead, it is an evolution, acknowledging advances in science and social norms, to meet the needs of modern-day heathens. This book explains how the Viking's values and attitudes, adapted to a modern world, can work today to make your life more satisfying and rewarding. It provides guidance on how to incorporate those things more intentionally into your life. The traits and values that this belief system encourages, like honesty, warranted pride, commitment to long term goals, and the importance of acting honorably will help a person be more responsible, confident, and motivated to achieve whatever they desire. From Odin we learn the importance of wisdom and the value of life-long learning. Hard work, dedication, belief in yourself, and a sense of purpose are just some of the attributes characteristic of a Norse Pagan way of life. Those traits are also key for successful men and women in almost every career field, including the military, which is discussed in detail. Because it is not just a religion, but a way of life, you will also find information about the function of magic in the everyday life of our ancestors and how it manifests today. How modern-day heathens celebrate special events and holidays and how you can begin to build your own memorable traditions. You will learn the important role of reciprocity in Norse Paganism. Also included are stories from the lives of the people behind the sources, including the ambitious Roman orator Tacitus, creator of the controversial, 2,000-year-old book, Germania. You will learn the real reason why the people of Germania were a "pure race." Spoiler alert, despite what White Supremacists would like you to believe, it had nothing to do with race.… (altro)

A straight forward and easy to read introduction to modern Norse Paganism. This book covers a variety of topics from racism to rituals to holidays to history without feeling like you're reading a textbook. The author clearly has passion for the topic and it's clear in their writing. Overall a good read, would recommend to anyone new to the topic. ( )

I love all things pagan and A Modern Heathen’s Guide did not disappoint. It’s a refreshing explanation and exploration of the author’s beliefs and incorporation of paganism into one’s life style. I’m glad to see he put the racists, who have co-opted into their horrid beliefs, into their place. I’ve clearly watched too many versions of the Viking song “My mother told me” on YouTube.

Quinby C. Larson shares a personal journey to finding a spiritual path by studying the old lessons and stories of Norse mythology. Larson ties them directly to modern life in an easy-to-approach way. Larson shares personal stories and the journeys he has taken. Very personal and interesting read. I would have never thought to incorporate Norse paganism into my outlook on life, but Larson definitely makes a strong case for it. Larson is also quick to disprove or dismiss misconceptions about Norse mythology (e.g. that it equates to white nationalism, or dudes playing swords and dress-up in the park). In some case, Larson instead flips misconceptions on their heads (e.g. Loki & modern transgender issues). All in all, a very easy read. I'm not going to start practicing paganism any time soon, but I will absolutely think about the lessons he's translated from those "old ways."

This modern guide to Norse Paganism is a great jumping off point! In the beginning it feels a little like you're being sold the religion. It's a little off putting but the rest of the book is great! I particularly like that the explanation of the misinterpretation of the "Germania" texts that unfortunately links Norse Paganism and racism. I think that is a particularly important chapter and wish it was more widely known. There are stories of the gods, rituals and traditions, history, and more. If you have a beginners interest in Norse Paganism, I recommend it.

This was an in-depth & intriguing read on Norse Paganism. I learned many new things on this subject & which I feel is rare with most books on Norse Paganism in recent years. Thank you to the author for a wonderful read & furthering my education. This is a book that I would recommend to those just starting on the path of learning about Norse Paganism as it is written concisely. ( )
