I know I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but I did for Made Up. I’ll admit that I wasn’t too impressed with the not very professional cover, so I expected the story was also going to be a bit amateurish. Boy, was I wrong. This is one of the nicest romance fics I have read.
Katia is an ordinary woman with a bad past experience with a boyfriend. She isn’t a beautiful woman that has to marry an angsty, mysterious Duke for some obscure reason (as an example) like many romance fics. She’s an ordinary woman with a bit of a screwed up family, just like a lot of people. That’s what I liked about Katia, she was ordinary.
The romance between Katia and Owen is not one of those cookie cutter romances where the heroine swoons at the first sight of the man she has sworn to hate or been forced into marrying. Instead, the relationship between the this couple develops over time with first friendly chatter, joking and then Katia’s gradual realization that she is attracted to Owen more than she is ready for, or wants to be. We’re aware that Owen has some interest in Katia, but he keeps his interest under a tight rein and we only sometimes get glimpses of it. This type of developing romance is my favorite kind. I’ve never cared for the highly unlikely ‘love at first sight’ that is overly prevalent in romantic fics. Made Up does a great job of making Katia's and Owen’s romance real.
There seemed to be two themes running through this story. One was dealing with Perception and the other was about Responsibility and how various characters in the story either learn the lessons dealing with these two themes, or whether they continue to stagnant.
First is the Perception of what Owen was really like viewed through the public’s, co-workers and Katia’s eyes. Next, Katia’s sister’s perception of Katia and their continuing “contests” which are a figment of V’s mind. And then there was Steve, Tony’s best friend and his perception of Katia based on the information that Tony gave him.
Next theme is Responsibility. Katia took responsibility for Helena leaving the set because Helena borrowed the dress that Owen gave to Katia. The trouble that went down with Cassandra because of the dress was not Katia’s responsibility, but she blamed herself anyway. Then there is Katia’s sister V again, and her inability to take responsibility for her jealousy of Katia and framing their life events between her and Katia as a competition. Finally, there’s Tony, unwilling to take responsibility for his alcoholism and his personal debts. Instead he fabricates lies in order to make himself look the victim and Katia the villain.
Slowly the story unfolds with Katia learning which perceptions are real and which are merely gossip. Next, she learns about what is and is not her responsibility. And finally, she’s able to let go of her past and move on to a better future.
The writing style is easy to read and the pace moved along well. The author was able to hold my interest as she described the world of movie making and the locations used for the settings of the movie. I think the thing I would have preferred in the story, was more explicit sex scenes. But that is personal preference, and the current level may suit other readers perfectly.
Formatting needs to be fixed in epub format. In the first quarter of the story, the font size would vary between normal all the way down to about one-eighth in height, which was very difficult to read. The other issue was in the last few chapters of the book, it appeared that someone didn’t proofread/edit it well. There were numerous instances of missing words and incorrect tenses.
Other than the technical issues, this was an enjoyable read. I give it four stars and would recommend it to anyone wanting to read a romance story with characters that grow, and a female lead that is not your usual beautiful swooning female lusting or falling instantly in love with (add in your typical romantic lead man here.)
