Short but interesting read. I found all of the examples in the book interesting and helpful in my understanding. However, some of the formatting of the book, especially the quotes, made it difficult to read. ( )

The Problem With the Male Gaze was a good introduction of how the male gaze impacts how women are portrayed, and how this impact's their self- worth. Although the main idea seemed to be the film industry's treatment of how women were represented, it also dove into how they were treated in school and sports. I agreed with all the information provided in these sections, but found they didn't quite align with the original theme of film. I also would have liked to have seen more research backing up claims made in the book. I found the font for the quotes hard to read, and would like to see a crisper font to increase accessibility for readers. This is a timely book which has the potential to have a positive impact on a wide audience.

After some technical issues, I was excited to get into this “book”. Now I’m not quoting book to comment on the topic — we need to have more conversations about how women and girls are portrayed, on film, in sport, etc. The reason I’m quoting book, because this materials is maybe 30 pages. I’m just unsure of the destination of this material to the reader. There are a lot of images in the book that seem counterproductive to the thesis, and then there is the several blank pages for the reader to … journal their thoughts? Make a to do this? Idiot republican congressman hitlist? It does seem to cheapen the strong case being made.

And as a suggestion, just as a librarian who has a colleague that focuses their career on inclusion, the typeface for the “quotes” in the book is incredibly hard to read. By the second chapter I gave up trying to decipher the words.

The few pages of this work that are relevant are very good, and very useful. Anything on this topic is. It’s just lessened by the magazine window dressing, and I’m very lost on the destination of this material to the reader. ( )
