This book started out very much in the tradition of Regency romances and, truthfully, that was all I was expecting, with a little magic thrown in. Instead, we had a rather meaty murder mystery thrown into the mix along with British political machinations to contain Bonaparte and a secondary character introduced who defied the conventions of the trope, as does the primary female character. Overall, a much more substantial story than I was expecting, with some twists worthy of Georgette Heyer. ( )

I received this book as and Early Reviewer and this is my honest review.

I love a good regency book, and this one sounded interesting with a bit of magic thrown in. Unfortunately as I read through the book it was very slow going for me. There was lots of well-written descriptions, but absolutely nothing was happening to move the book forward. Let me stress this, the book was very well written, I find no fault in the writing. The magic part which I had looked forward too seemed to be very minimal. If you love Regency romances you will love this book, my expectations for more magic is why I give this rating. I do hope to see more books in this series, as I can see others have enjoyed it. I wish the author all the best in her writing. ( )

It is a while since I have read a regency novel, however, it did not take long to adapt to the slower change of pace, and it was quite relaxing and enjoyable. We follow the events following a society lady’s invitation to an old friend to bring her family to London for the season, so that her eldest daughter can have a proper coming out, and the various intrigues that result from this temporary move. Some happenings resolve in an expected way, whereas others are more intriguing.
This is regency with a level of subversion that I found suited the world the author has built, bridging quite nicely to a more modern society. The element of magic, which at first I was unsure about was done well and contextually appropriate. Overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to seeing how the characters and events develop in further books in the series.

1808 Taunton Somerset. The Greville family have decided it is time for eldest daughter Charity to have a season. So they stay with friend Lady Elizabeth Holbech. Her son Earl of Alspath is head of the King's Secret Police. When Lord Castlereagh is murdered Charity becomes involved in the investigation because of her magical abilities.
An entertaining historical murder mystery with its elements of mystery, romance and paranormal. With its cast of varied and likeable characters, it is a good start to this new series. ( )

A most enjoyable book, with small elements of Jane Austen and Anne Perry. Charity, with her three sisters and parents go to London for the “Season”. Looking for a suitable husband takes a backseat to Charity helping Lord Alspath, whose mother’s house they are staying at. Her sister Patience has no real interest in finding a husband and the two younger girls are excited about seeing all of London. A surprising element is added to this mix. A surprising and satisfying ending defies conventions. Highly recommended. ( )
