Fiction. Literature. Romance. Historical Fiction. HTML:

New York Times bestselling author Sophie Jordan returns with an all new sizzling historical romance in her Duke Hunt series about a woman determined to reclaim her family home from the dangerously handsome owner of London's most popular gaming hell.

The owner of London's most popular gaming hell, wealthy and powerful Silas Masters, is feared by men and desired by womenâ??except Mercy Kittinger. When the blackguard wins her family home in a game of cards, Mercy steals into Silas's rooms, intent on destroying the proof. But things don't go to plan...

She would have her way with him...

Caught in the act, Mercy must be bold to save herself...even if it means seducing the dangerous rogue and then disappearing with the dawn, debt voucher in hand. Safe at home and determined to settle back into her quiet, uneventful life, Mercy burns at the memory of her night spent ravishing the most compelling man she'd ever met. Thank goodness she'll never see him again!

He didn't see her coming...

No one trifles with Silas Masters. Even if he could forget the dark-haired seductress who undid him, he can't allow anyone to steal from him. He will hunt down the sultry woman who haunts his dreams and show her just how sweet payback can be.… (altro)

There was a lot about this I liked, but there were a couple major issues.

First, the writing could use some work. It goes purple with some frequency, and there are a lot of really tortured metaphors. She refers to people physically draw to one another as being like two slices of bread separated and longing to be reunited. Huh? Second, the female MC, Mercy, has a horrid brother who gambles away their family manse and much more and is unbothered by any pain or difficulty he causes and he gets virtually no comeuppance. He is stopped from doing to much more damage but he also ends up just fine. The second most vile character actually benefits financially from being a horrible human. That was not satisfying at all. In the end it was a better than average historical -- about a 3.5 rounded down for its firm stand against retribution. ( )

Mercy Kittinger sneaks into a gaming hell to steal back her brother's voucher for their family farm. When she's caught by Silas Masters, she diverts him by seducing him, then disappears with the critical paper. Silas goes after her and the rest of the story takes place on the farm.
I loved both Mercy and Silas. He is just a good man, not a rake, who is fascinated by Mercy. Mercy is awesome, a strong woman who tries to keep things on track despite her idiot brother Bede and bratty sister Grace. These latter two were the biggest problem I had with the book. Bede is lazy, cruel, and just objectionable. I never understood why the fact Mercy stole the voucher negated the paper as a gentleman would be expected to honor it regardless (at least according to hundreds of HRs I've read).
Grace is just a brat and her sudden transformation didn't seem real at the end.
We spent too much time on these two and not enough on Mercy and Silas's relationship IMHO. So I give this 3 1/2 stars. ( )
