A terrifically different take on the serial killer story trope, beautifully made extra unsettling by being presented through the perspective of dogs drawn in the style of 80s and 90s Disney and Don Bluth children's animation. ( )

I stumbled across this in the library and figured it would be a winner for me, and it was. The artwork looks like it’s from a children’s movie, and if it weren’t for the spine label telling me otherwise, I might have thought it was for kids. The blurb on the front describing it as Silence of the Lambs meets All Dogs Go to Heaven was also a clue.

I loved getting everything from the dogs’ POV. It made for some humorous moments at the beginning, before things started getting dark. Dog lovers, you might need this spoiler. Not all the dogs make it. It’s still worth reading, but be prepared to get sad a couple of times.

It’s a neat—if horrifying—original idea for a graphic novel, and I appreciated the contrast of the artistic style and the content. It’s a quick, scary read, and I’m thinking it must be a standalone. I wouldn’t mind seeing these little buddies again, but I’m glad this one had a satisfying ending rather than a cliffhanger.

Trigger Warnings: Murder, animal killings, animal abuse

Sophie can’t remember what happened to her lady and she can’t remember why she’s suddenly in this house filled with other dogs. But when she smells her lady’s scarf again, it all comes back to her. Now, she must convince the other dogs and hope they all can survive this.

This novel has been on my radar for a while now and I finally got around to it. I don’t read a lot of horror novels, but I seem to be into horror graphic novels.

The art in this looks kiddish (the illustrators are My Little Pony artists) but this novel is anything but there’s murder, a skinned dog, and trophied dog heads in a closet . It’s dark and imagery - I like what they did with the dog’s memory, not 100% sure if that’s true or not, but it worked for this story.

I think this will be a book I will reread, especially around Halloween and such.

I’m going to include more of the harm done to the dogs here so you can decide more if it’s okay for you Though it’s not directly shown in the panel a dog does get kicked. The action of killing one of the dogs is set behind a shed and not seen, but “heard”. There is a page where a dog’s skinned fur is hanging. Another dog gets covered in glass from a broken window. A dog also gets hit by a car . ( )
