Look up to the skies through Bob Riggle's eyes in this wheelstanding, must-have Mopar history book on Hemi Under Glass! While the established stock and modified brackets are long-recognized as the heart and soul of drag racing, it was the wheelstanders that more often than not put butts in the bleachers. In that category, some of the most well-known names included Bill "Maverick" Golden's Little Red Wagon, Bill Shewsberry's L.A. Dartand Chuck Poole's Chuck Wagon. Although, most memorable of all was the Hurst Hemi Under GlassPlymouth Barracuda campaigned by Bob Riggle. Riggle started his career in the early 1960s as a car builder and mechanic for Hurst-Campbell and eventually ascended to pilot the Hemi Under Glass. When he left Hurst in 1969, the Hemi Under Glassfranchise transferred with Riggle. He continued for six more years as the owner/driver of a succession of Hemi Under Glassrenditions. In the 1990s he resurrected the concept of the original car--making four different versions (1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969)--and continued to thrill drag racing fans with his wheelstanding antics. At the time of this writing, Bob's last run with the Hemi Under Glasswas in the summer of 2019. He claims to have retired (he was 83 years old at the time), but he's claimed that before! For all the success he enjoyed over his long and distinguished career, which is believed to be one of the longest in all of motorsports, he's best remembered for a run at Irwindale Raceway in early 2016 with comedian and car buff Jay Leno in the passenger seat in a video that has been viewed more than 10 million times. This is Bob's story, one that Mark Fletcher and Richard Truesdell, co-authors of the 2012 book Hurst Equipped, are honored to share. They say the story was easy to tell--given their unprecedented access not only to Bob but also to his vast archive of photos that reflect his ongoing popularity. Many of the photos in this book are seen in print for the very first time.… (altro)

I found this book fascinating. I'm not really a "car person," but, for some reason, I liked this book and how easy it was to read. ( )

Growing up in the 60's, I worked a bit as a mechanic and loved the beauty of MOPAR’s Hemi. It was a definite wish-list item.
I enjoyed watching drag racing and the excitement of watching a car run the quarter mile on two wheels was incredible! I welcome a history of the Hemi Under Glass. Viewing the hundreds of beautiful photographs was make the book worth the price!
The history is equal to the photographs including the driver the parts and the engine.
This book brought back many memories (and wishes) to me and left me smiling in a young mechanic’s reminiscences!

This book is all about the Drag racing legend Bob Riggle and his Hemi Under Glass cars. This seems well researched and documented. I have to admit, going into this book I knew nothing about the scene, but it was cool to get a glimpse into the world of drag racing and Bob Riggle's racing life. I highly recommend this book for the racing fans. So many well taken photos and lots of information.

Very informative and highly enjoyable.
The book begins with a foreword by Linda Vaughn, the longtime Miss Hurst, who because of the Hemi Under Glass's close association with Hurst, worked alongside Bob Riggle for many years.
The book proper begins with a brief biography of Bob's life up to the point where Bob becomes involved with Hurst, It includes chapters describing Hurst's early development, Bob's joining the Hurst racing team, and then the years of the Hemi Under Glass. It also has a brief section on other wheel standers, giving some context to the central car of the book.
What I particularly enjoyed , were the sections describing Bob's several recreations of the vehicles in later years and especially his trips to military bases and hospitals to entertain the men and women serving our country.
Finally, the book includes a chapter on the Jay Leno rollover incident. describing the preliminary spot on Jay's show that led to the real ride along, why what happened did, and untangling the subsequent video clip edits of the incident,
There are many wonderful pictures of the cars in action both in their original heyday and the later replications. There replications also include photos of the car during the build.
The only thing that would improve this book would be more detailed pictures of the engine and interior of the original cars.
Final comment - As I have come to expect from Car Tech publications, the main text always ends before any sidebars, so there is no need to flip pages. ( )
