A lot of this story was pretty awesome and checked a lot of my boxes. (I don't like romances, I swear, but) The love between the girl and the trees, and the girl and the girl, was lovely. The beginning was my kind of heaven.

It's a dystopian story so there is only so much to love before you start to be sad. The environment is horrible, the government's control of the truth is horrible, the backstabbing and the causes of death are horrible.

In the mix of the horrible and the beautiful, at least there are people who love the trees, people who love each other and people that love stories. ( )

This is a really powerful story, and now I'm curious to look up the real Future Library project that inspired the novelette. It's a short read, so I am not going into spoiler territory, but I will say that it's a dystopian story that doesn't feel like a dystopian story. It is filled with heart and hope even as it paints a grim (possible) future for humanity. ( )

100 years from now, an arborist fighting to save the last remaining forest on Earth discovers a secret about their trees. A secret that will change the world.

Inspired by the real-life "Future Library Project", a public artwork that aims to collect an original work by a popular writer every year from 2014 to 2114. The works will remain unread and unpublished until 2114.

Peng Shepherd uses magical realism in such a wonderful way that this short story was able to wrap itself around all the feels. It’s about love, endings, warnings, climate change, humans being too selfish for their own good, and the importance of trees and books! It’s a love story mixed in with a dystopian science fiction about stories/books - what’s not to love?

It’s beautiful and heartbreaking all at the same time. It’s a quick read (only 32 pages). Please go check it out!

"Love is not something that happens to a person, but something a person does for another person, every day, every moment. A labor, not a feeling." ( )

I was thrilled to see a new story from Peng Shepherd after loving the spectacular 'Book of M'. This is spectacular as well. Inspired by the real-life Future Library - that project of trees and books from great writers that none of us alive will be able to read in one hundred years. (Have fun reading, people of 2114!) And this story gives that library a speculative spin. Good stuff.
