I love this series and was pulled right back into the world the author had created from the first sentence. The world this story is set in is still as descriptive as ever, and made me feel like I was right there in the 1960’s, but only with magic. I’ve read all of the books in this series, although I haven’t written a review to each yet. Since these books deal with demons, magic, sorcery, and the dead, it’s perfect reading in October. The blurb does a great job of describing what the plot is about so I won’t go into it. I’d recommend that the previous books be read before this one. I don’t think this can be read as a stand-alone because Darien and Silas are already in a relationship, and Pip, Darien’s familiar, is in it also. Also, friends from the previous stories make an appearance as do members of Silas’ Guild.
There’s always a mystery in these stories. In Books One to Three, the plots mostly involved demons and ghosts, along with possessed sorcerers or necromancers. This plot deals with corrupt magical users who kidnap Jasper and Darien, and Silas’ search to rescue them. The ending does include battles with demons, some profound revelations about what kind of magic Darien has, Darien's discovery about how his magic can harm others, and a hint of problems to come from the various guilds because of Darien’s abilities. Grim is also working on the mystery of where all the rats are coming from in the mansion, and why no matter how many he catches, the number doesn’t decrease.
The author does an excellent job of keeping the characters consistent with the way they were written in the previous books. The relationship between Darien and Silas in this book, was more about Silas’ worry for Darien and the lengths he would go to rescue him. Since this story has more action, their romantic relationship and character growth wasn’t the main focus. I would say that the plot focused more on Silas and Darien developing an extended family, as people come together to help Darien and Jasper. Silas is growing past his independent life in Book One, to add Darien into his circle. Then he adds in Pip, Darien’s familiar, and also Jasper. Along the way, more people are added. This book is just not about personal growth for Darien and Silas, but also about growing friendships.
Trapped by Greed is a terrific addition to the ‘Necromancer’ series and I’d recommend it to anyone who enjoyed books 1-3. I give this book, 5 Stars.
