This book starts with:
-- Introduction (by Bill Gunston).
-- Glossary (with Airframe and Engine Design Bureaux section).
-- Notes (including comments on Russian language factors and German aircraft designations (Bf or Me)).
It ends with:
-- 4 pages of 17 color profiles, as follows (number of profiles in parentheses, if more than one):
---- Polikarpov I-153 (2) and I-16 (3)
---- Lavochkin LaGG-3 (2), La-5 (2), La-7 radial (2) and La-7B in-line (2)
---- Yakovlev Yak-1 and Yak-3 (3)
-- 7 tables as follows (number of entries in parentheses):
---- A. Lavochkin, Gorbunov and Gudkov (24)
---- B. Mikoyan-Gurevich (15)
---- C. Polikarpov biplanes (16)
---- D. Polikarpov monoplanes (17)
---- E. Other Types (18)
---- F. Yakovlev Earlier (21)
---- G. Yakovlev Later (28)
-- Index
In between is the substance of the work, 160 pages. It is very readable. It covers 16 OKBs (design bureau), among which are:
-- Lavochkin (42 pages)
-- Mikoyan-Gurevich (20 pages)
-- Polikarpov (32 pages)
-- Yakovlev (50 pages)
Pros:
-- Nearly everything!
-- The tabular data is in Metric and Imperial, etc. (hp/kW, m/ft-in, kg/lb, etc.).
-- The tabular data include references to the page number in the main text.
Cons:
-- I feel that their explanation of the source of 'BI' (under Bereznyak-Isaev) is inadequate.
-- There is no profile for any MiG figthers.
-- The tabular data should include some indication of the number of aircraft produced.
-- Too thin. It should have been combined with Volume 2. ( )
