Lainey of the Door Islands, by Judy DuCharme, is a quick, easy to read story of a young girl who is forced to endure several very hard situations. From the loss of her parents, living with relatives, and being given to others to raise is just part of it. I enjoyed reading how she gained strength through each new situation and rose above. I also enjoyed the strength her uncle showed with rising above his physical limitations after an accident. The families are so generous and caring. This is a well written story that paints a picture of the hard life a life house keeper. The writing is so clear it is easy to imagine the surrounding and situations. I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author through CelebrateLit, this is my honest review. This is a nice story set in the late 1800s where times were tough for most people. The jobs didn’t pay well so they had to use their supplies sparingly. I loved learning about lighthouses and the hard work it goes into running one. Ships depended on the lighthouse keeper to guide them to safety. The author does a good job of helping us visualize shipwrecks and the dangers of the sea. Our star character Lainey is a sweet young girl who has experienced great loss in her young life. We are taken on a journey as Lainey matures and becomes a young woman who experiences her first crush. I laughed remembering mine as well. The butterflies you feel and the smile you can’t erase from your face is hard to hide. I was sad when Lainey had to leave her uncle and aunt. They did make the right decision I think because they wanted the best for Lainey. I loved reading how Lainey adjusted to her new family and how much she felt loved. Her confidence was building as she began to relax in her new surroundings. Lainey will always think fondly of her time with her aunt and uncle but God is leading her in a new direction. Clifford is just right for Lainey and there is a funny moment in the story that made me laugh out loud. All I will say is that is involves chickens. The story is a wonderful look at trusting God, following His direction for your life and finding happiness. I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

"Walk with Lainey into the world of Door County and its islands in the late 1800s. A time of shipwrecks, lighthouses, and strong people that never give up. Lighthouse keepers risk their lives every day to save others and protect those on ships on the Great Lakes. But for Lainey, life on tiny Pilot Island is a hard place for summer vacation--Aunt Edith is always making her do chores and fussing at her. And Uncle Otis needs a lot of help to man the lighthouse. When disaster hits, Lainey must find the courage and strength of those who make their lives on these treacherous islands. With humor, faith, close friendships, and a young man who interferes with her ability to think, Lainey becomes a shining light of spunk and grace. Lainey of the Door Islands will touch your heart and show you that even in what feels like the worst circumstances, God has a plan to prosper and not to harm"--Provided by publisher.
