Being a fan of true crime novels, this one did not fail to disappoint me and I found myself completely immersed in this story. In the 1980's sophmore Katherine Hawelka is just going back to school when she is found brutally beaten and raped on campus taking a shortcut from home after going out with friends. Nearby, Brian McCarthy is found underneath some stairs saying he was a victim too, but no marks are ever discovered on him. This follows their story as Katherine's family fights for justice and to constantly keep Brian in prison as his consideration for parole is considered every two years since he did not get a life sentence. He never really gives a true account of what happened, but has spent all these years telling lies, changing his story every time he's asked. Everything from he was a victim, to it was consensual, to he knew her personally, to he did not know what he was doing as he was under the influence of drugs and alcohol. It would be downright scary if this man is ever let out of prison and this author truly made this book centered on the victim as is should be. Luckily, colleges and universities made campuses safer as the years have passed because of stories like Katie's and this was a truly intriguing account.
