Once a successful surgeon, Frederick Welin now lives in self-imposed exile on an island in the Swedish archipelago. Molto bello, niente da dire. Una biografia romanzata (o un romanzo autobiografico, dipende da come la si vuole vedere) sugli sfondi di un anno svedese. Una storia che racconta una vita amara, con errori, figlie ritrovate, senso di solitudine e voglia di lasciarsi andare. Adesso aspettiamo i sandali di legno..... ( )
Narrazione della vecchiaia di un uomo depresso, sconfitto dalla vita e votato alla solitudine, sorpreso dall'arrivo di una donna un tempo amata ed ora condannata da un male incurabile che gli affida la figlia di cui lui non sapeva nulla. Ci sono tutti gli ingredienti per angosciare i protagonisti e con loro il lettore, che cerca di finire il libro abbandonando man mano ogni aspettativa d'un raggio di speranza. Un Mankell ormai votato a esplorare la tristezza della senilità. ( )
Un Menkell intimista e che non mi dispiace. Non é un romanzo giallo, niente assassinii niente Wallander e i suoi uomini. Però gli omicidi ci sono lo stesso, i piccoli omicidi quotidiani, quelli che commettiamo e a volte subiamo, consapevolmente o meno. Le ferite che infliggiamo o che riceviamo, vere o presunte. Il giallo c'é, il mistero anche: quello dell'animo umano e del suo agire, che per quanta introspezione ed elaborazione dei vissuti possiamo fare, esso perdura. Piccole scintille di comprensione a volte si presentano e allora si perdona o ci si perdona, e a volte ciò porta a un cambiamento nella nostra vita e in quella di chi ci sta attorno. A volte.
