The story revolves around life, death, heartbreak, and family. This not a casual read as book is immersive and descriptive, introducing various characters and their perspectives over the ordeal of Uqnitum's conflicted past and present.

N.L. Holmes has written another fascinating story that tugs at your heart. Strength and courage are two themes that stand out in this book. From page 1, Uqnitum starts strong with her strength as the Assyrians overtake her city and she has to collect her family and try to escape. She fears for her life and her family. Raised without a mother, she grew up headstrong and doesn't back down from a fight. In today's world, we might call her "filter" broken. She and her family are taken by the the enemy. The loss of her son and husband chip away a bit at her strength and she seems to just lose it a little. Tatasshe, her daughter is pregnant. It comes down to the two of them. Uqnitum just thinks she is being helpful (control freak anyone?). Tatasshe wants to break free for her sanity and has to learn how to do that. With the help of new friends and unfortunately, a near tragedy, she is able to make that leap. Tatasshe makes strides to grown in her strength by speaking up and telling her mom what she wants. Supporting characters in the story are also written very well. The descriptions and characteristics made it so easy to have your own little movie running in your head. The plot line was so good. I felt every emotion. When Uqnitum's husband was blinded, my heart stopped. I felt every emotion. This book is fantastic. Highly recommended. ( )

I would highly recommend The Singer and Her Song as a character-driven, immersive historical work that any fan of accomplished family drama will enjoy. 5/5 stars

I admired the powerful presence of the female protagonist in the book. Uqnitum's jarring and outspoken personality, when juxtaposed against her husband's mellow and kind personality, might make her appear proud and arrogant at the beginning of the book. But if one looks at her through the prism of life, one realizes, her courage, her fortitude in the face of danger, her desperation to protect her children against the world, her defiance, and her fear of turning into a narcissist like her father; all melt and mold together into the person who is Uqnitum. The author skillfully develops her character. Her convictions and her follies make her more human. Other characters have been developed equally with care... There is nothing I disliked about the book.

Author N. L. Holmes transports readers to a stunning new vista in this culturally refreshing historical tale which takes us far from the typical boring historical genres of popular fiction. What results is a rich learning experience from an author who brings authenticity and atmosphere to every page, delivering dramatic changes in politics alongside family life and personal mental health struggles in 1235 BCE. One of the things that impressed me most was the close narration and commitment to character, which brings us into Uqnitum’s head as she struggles with her own personality issues and the vast changes to her life that she cannot cope with. The novel is, at its heart, a deeply personal journey that we are privy to, and overall I would highly recommend The Singer and Her Song as a character-driven, immersive historical work that any fan of accomplished family drama will enjoy. 5/5 stars

THE SINGER AND HER SONG is a somber delight; a well-researched novel that brings to life the very human characters caught in a time of war and tragedy, yet equally at the mercy of their own foibles and forced to find a way to survive tangled interpersonal relationships.4.5/5 stars
