"From one of the world's leading neuroscientists--a succinct, illuminating, wholly engaging investigation of the phenomenon of consciousness. In recent decades, many philosophers and cognitive scientists have declared the question of consciousness unsolvable, but Antonio Damasio is convinced that recent findings in neurobiology, psychology, and AI have given us the necessary tools to solve its mystery. Now, he not only elucidates its myriad aspects, but presents his analysis and insights in a way that is faithful to our own intuitive sense of the experience of consciousness. In the 45 brief chapters of the book, he helps us understand the relation between consciousness and mind; why being conscious is not the same as either being awake or sensing; the essential role of feeling; and the biological brain and development of consciousness. He synthesizes the recent findings of various sciences with the outlook of philosophy, and, most significantly, presents his original research which has transformed our understanding of the brain and human behavior. Here is an indispensable guide to understanding consciousness, the fundamental human capacity for informing--and transforming--our experience of the world around us and our perception of our place in it"--… (altro)

An exploration of what consciousness is and how it evolved. More understandable to me than many books like this have been, partly because mostly he really doesn’t get too technical, and also because of the book’s structure, almost 50 tiny, well organized chapters, that gradually build on each other, but with plenty of repeated definitions and repeated explanations so if you didn’t quite catch his meaning at some point you’re not totally lost later on. I’m sure for some this might seem repetitive and simplistic but it was just right for me. ( )

Poor stuff. such a falling off since Descartes' Error and Searching for Spinoza. All very abstract. A string of assertions, somewhat repetitive. ``````no evidence , no anecdotes, no prior sources. Only thing I learned by listening in spanish is that conscience and Consciousness use the same word in Spanish Conscience. perhaps that is an insight in itself. ( )

In this short book, Damasio seeks to express his ideas about mind, feelings, and consciousness much more concisely than before. Saying, e.g., that feelings make for efficient obeisance to homeostasis is certainly concise, but how clear is it? Damasio considers Chalmers's "hard problem" of consciousness to be a biologically unsound idea and tries to advance a perspective in which it does not arise. On an incidental point, he appears not to be friendly toward mind uploading, rejecting substrate independence and likening the process to "transferring recipes, and only recipes, to a computer device" that would not gain "access to the actual tastes and smells of the real cooking and of the real food".
