Wonderful story about how a child that can't see very well deals with relaying it to her family. She is part of a large family and overlooked by her parents because she is the timid one. This story is a great story is a child has a large family or is in the process/ has glasses. ( )

Grades 1-2. Kate has 4 brothers and sisters. She's small, quiet, and "no trouble at all," and sometimes she gets forgotten. She also can't see very well. Up close her vision is fine, but further away, everything is blurry. By now she's, "used to blurry blobs and splashes of color." Since no one pays close enough attention to Kate, they don't notice anything abnormal. She doesn't know what other people can see, so she doesn't think there's anything wrong. One day at the beach, Kate gets lost and can't find her family because of her poor vision. She panics and runs allover, but finally mom finds her. Finally, her parents realize Kate is near-sighted. They apologize for not noticing it sooner, and get her glasses the next week. This makes Kate very happy. At last, she can see everything and has something to make her noticeable and feel important.

Fortunately the author remains positive about Kate getting glasses, and focuses on how they improve her quality of life. Unfortunately the book's premise is that because Kate is quiet, she is overlooked/neglected in a large family -- which seemed to send a negative message about being part of a large family. ( )
