The Meaning of Mariah I Picked Up This Book Because: I love celebrity memoirs. Media Type: Audiobook Source: Audible Dates Read: 8/20/21 - 8/23/21 Stars: 4 Stars The Story: I heard a lot of negative things about this book. Particularly a lot about Mariah’s relationship with her mother. And I can see why some of it was said. It is definitely a rough relationship but honestly it’s easy to judge from outside of the bubble. I can only imagine how I would deal with the situations she was put in. Some were frankly alarming. You can tell Mariah has gotten professional help in coming to grips with her past and her present and kudos to her. It takes courage and strength to overcome trauma and it’s a never ending battle. I loved and was shocked by the stories behind some of her songs. I was so nostalgic hearing some of them. Some I’d even forgotten about. A lot of this book dealt with the past and very little was written about the present but I suppose she is choosing to protect her life and her family. I do hope she writes another book in a few years perhaps exploring more of the person she is now. Narrator(s): Read by the author so of course it was a good job. I could have done with a bit less singing. She sang in like every chapter. The Random Thoughts: This is THE book for true Mariah Carey fans. I’ve loved her for many years but even moreso her now. She explained the meaning behind her songs which she provided the music for and perfectly sang. She is mostly definitely a prodigy. But also she shared a heartfelt story of her life. Most anyone can relate to some aspect to her journey. I surely could
"I have seen, I have been scared, I have been scarred, and I have survived," writes Carey in this rags-to-riches tale that delves beneath the diamond-encrusted public persona to reveal a woman who has overcome childhood neglect, racism, mental illness and abuse. A twinkling humour underpins her account of her post-stardom years in which she acknowledges her "propensity for extraness", and throws fabulous shade at J-Lo without once mentioning her name. The vignettes of Mariah’s life are so easy to read despite the darker moments of her life. You truly never know what someone’s going though. There’s a saying I always hear in church, “you see the glory, but you don’t know my story!” Mariah’s family was really trifling, and we see the journey it took to extricate herself from the toxicity in her life.
Now, there’s a real fixation on skin-color from light to dark, blackness, who’s the color of a waffle, and growing up biracial/mixed race, but, hey, a lot of society and the US is colorstruck. With Mariah’s mixed-race experiences, I think the exploration of race was warranted here. There’s only a brief mention about Nick Cannon (he’s the father of her children, so I get it; keep it classy) or the messiness with Stella. Another memoir maybe?
Still, I enjoyed reading this. Loved the BTS on Mariah’s biggest hits. ( )
