( ) This is a wonderfully illustrated biography of Harriet Tubman. We learn early in the book that Harriet's name is Araminta (Minty for short) and that she was born into slavery. She started working when she was 5 checking muskrat traps and babysitting until she was sent to work in the fields. She was beaten on multiple occasions. As she grew older, she changed her name to Harriet and saved any extra money to escape to freedom someday. In 1849, Harriet and a couple other family members escaped using the Underground Railroad. Harriet returned often to help others escape as well. The Fugitive Slave Law of 1850 made it tougher to help others escape but she didn't give up, she became more careful. Harriet gave speeches about the need to abolish slavery. She worked as a nurse during the war to spy on Confederate soldiers and to help rescue slaves. After the war, she opened a boardinghouse to give food and shelter to those in need and built a home for the aged and indigent. She also started speaking out about allowing women to vote. Harriet helped many people escape and changed many peoples lives. She was an influence for good. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
