Fiction. Romance. Historical Fiction. Simon Basset, the irresistible Duke of Hastings, has hatched a plan to keep himself free from the town's marriage-minded society mothers. He pretends to be engaged to the lovely Daphne Bridgerton. After all, it isn't as if the brooding rogue has any real plans to marry-though there is something about the alluring Miss Bridgerton that sets Simon's heart beating a bit faster. And as for Daphne, surely the clever debutante will attract some very worthy suitors now that it seems a duke has declared her desirable. But as Daphne waltzes across ballroom after ballroom with Simon, she soon forgets that their courtship is a complete sham. And now she has to do the impossible and keep herself from losing her heart and soul completely to the handsome hell-raiser who has sworn off marriage forever!.… (altro)

faither: This is the first in a similar series about a large family looking for spouses in Regency England. Both series are quite entertaining.

I received a copy of this book for free from the publisher (Avon) for promotional purposes.

I just want to preface this review by saying this is only the second Bridgerton book I’ve read. I previously read The Duke and I (which I enjoyed). I have watched the show and at the time of writing this review, have watched the first half of Season 3. Because of that, I obviously knew some of the big plot points (i.e. Penelope being Lady Whistledown).

I ended up loving Colin and Penelope’s story!

First off, Colin calls Penelope “the most remarkable woman in the world” (pg. 423). I whole heartedly agree. The fact that she was Lady Whistledown for 10 years is impressive. What a smart woman!

I liked Penelope and Colin together. The fact that they were both writers was really cute and I loved how Penelope encouraged Colin to pursue publishing his work. Colin definitely lacked a purpose in life until Penelope came along and guided him.

Additionally, I loved Lady Danbury and Penelope’s interactions. Lady Danbury took a liking to Penelope which helped her come out of her wallflower shell more.

The pacing of the story was good and the drama surrounding the unmasking of Lady Whistledown made for an interesting and fun read.

Overall, I really enjoyed this installment to the Bridgerton series and look forward to seeing the rest of it play out onscreen. ( )

I love flawed and tortured heroes, and Simon was that without it being unbelievable that anyone could like him. And Daphne was just wonderful. Their whole issue about children was heartbreaking, and its resolution a bit surprising. All in all, a great start to a wonderful series. ( )

Let me preface this by saying .......full disclosure....I do not read romance novels. I don't mind romance being a part of the story....and I've even read a few romance novels throughout the years that I liked......but, as a general rule.....I don't care for romance novels.

This book was in a big lot of books I purchased. I've been seeing Bridgerton everywhere......thanks to the adapted TV series.... I've even purchased the coffee creamer from Walmart.

I do appreciate period stories......I also really like high society and/or royalty stories. After reading the synopsis.....I decided to give it a go.

The Bridgerton family dynamics are entertaining, and I really enjoyed that each chapter begins with that weeks gossip rag.....Lady Wistledowns weekly paper.

This is still very much a romance series.....with all of the outlandish scenarios usually included....but, that said, there is still plenty to enjoy here, and I will almost certainly purchase the rest of the series to read. ( )

“She wanted to marry, truly she did, and she wasn't even holding out for a true love match. But was it really too much to hope for a husband for whom one had at least some affection?”

So I gave in. Bridgerton has been everywhere I turn lately so I decided to read it. I must admit that I didn't know what I was getting into. I usually find regency romances a tad boring. However, this one was really full of so much humor. I have to admit the Bridgerton family is huge but they all are so clearly defined that I was eager to hear more of their stories. Violet is the best regency mother I think I've ever read. I also look forward to finding out who Lady Whistledown is... I imagine it's going to be a huge shock when we discover who she is. Anyway, basics aside lets talk about Simon and Daphne's story. I love Daphne she is a no nonsense kind of girl. She is well aware of the way her society works and doesn't suffer many illusions of how life is going to go for her.

Daphne knows exactly what she wants... it's just getting it that proves to be the problem. Simon swoops in with a solution to both of their problems and as can be expected they begin to fall for each other. A lot of hilarious moments ensue. We get some tense moments with a duel... We get the swoon... the tortured past... the oh wow I can't believe she did that moment (one which really threw me...). The two are really a cute match and I enjoy the banter between them and watching how each of them becomes so comfortable around the other. I just wish that the book had picked up. It felt like things got the most interesting for me at about the last 30% of the book which took no time to read, whereas the first 70% felt like it took a month. However, I look forward to reading book 2. ( )

Mis ma oskan öelda - on halbu raamatuid ja on veel halvemaid. See on ikka päris s***.

For Danelle Harmon and Sabrina Jeffries, without whom I never would have turned in this book on time.
And for Martha of The Romance Journal electronic bulletin board, for suggesting I call it Daphne's Bad Heir Day.
And also for Paul, even though his idea of dancing is standing still while he holds my hand and watches me twirl.

The author produced addition epilogues to her Bridgerton books originally published in The Bridgertons: Happily Ever After, April 2013. They are sometimes included in reprints of the individual books. They may be considered as "spoilers" for books later in the series.
