Death By C*ck is the second book in the Fetish Alley series. It stars an established couple, Clay Mortimer and Tate Williams of M&W Investigations. This story is told in third person from both Clay and Tate’s pov.

I read the blurb for this book and it sounded interesting, so I thought I’d try it. Unfortunately, the blurb didn’t turn out to be anything like the story; at least it didn’t to me. I thought this book would be about two men investigating a murder having to do with BDSM. The plot wasn’t like that at all. The only thing related to the blurb was two men in a place called Fetish Alley. There is a touch of organized crime in this story and I don’t like books with the Mafia. I avoid them. I’m guessing this book will interest others, but it didn’t work for me. I do recommend reading the first book in this series first, because this story really feels like a continuation and I felt lost at times.

The parts I enjoyed about the story was the established couple, Clay and Tate. The author did a good job of showing their love and desire for each other, and both of their personalities were distinct, especially Tate’s. I enjoyed how the story started, with Tate and his expletives. He had me laughing. The other character I think the author did a good job with was Aurelio; I could imagine an uptight Italian man and his voice came through well.

Now comes the parts that didn’t work for me. First, the one word that comes to mind is ‘cluttered’. The story didn’t settle on one main plot, it had multiple plots all vying for just about the same level of attention. The action would switch between these plots and there wasn’t any down time for a breather. I like description, but I thought there was too much of it, it felt like there were too many words and I don’t mean the story was too long. Add in all the testosterone flying around, the snarky banter that never stopped, the large number of people’s names thrown at the reader as soon as the story started and I found it overwhelming. There was so much going on and jumping around, I couldn’t read for a long period of time.

The last thing that disappointed me was the mystery. Clay and Tate figured out who the murderer was about three-fourths of the way through the book, they just had to figure a way to prove it. So, instead of a huge reveal of the murderer, the reader already knows and just waits to have it confirmed which was lackluster. In the meantime the other ‘plots’ in the story took over continuing on with the ‘cluttered’ aspect. When I read a mystery, I want the suspense to build, to have red herrings and be surprised at the end. This book didn’t accomplish any of that.

Overall, I don’t think this was my kind of story subject matter or style of writing. It was likely written for a different type of reader so don’t let my review dissuade you from trying this book. If you read the first book and liked it, I’m guessing you’ll like this one. I’m afraid there were too many storylines taking place for me, creating a cluttered feel, and I won’t read more of this series. I give this book 3 Stars mostly because of Clay, Tate and Aurelio.

This return to Fetish Alley is just as much fun as the first book in the series. A friendship with alley club owner, Relio, and a solved fetish murder have lead M&W Investigations to be considered friends. When there’s another suspicious death in London’s Fetish Alley the two men are called in again. They are trusted and respected and that goes a long way in the Fetish community.

I love the quirky banter in the books and particularly, the relationship between Clay and Tate. Things haven’t always been smooth sailing for the couple, but they’ve found their way to a loving, supportive, hot partnership in business and life.

The details MacNicol puts into her characters is what makes them so interesting. Tate’s past still haunts him and I love that it’s still a presence in his life. I really enjoy the way that MacNicol discusses the emotions that catch the men off guard at times. And… little details like playing rock, paper, scissors to see who gets to drive the motorcycle make me love them even more.

The case isn’t too complex, it’s more a case of hunting down the evidence. But, as the clues unfold, it becomes clear that Clay and Tate’s relationship has been evolving. I still feel as though there is a lot I don’t know about Tate and Clay… I would definitely enjoy a flashback to their past.

These books are very enjoyable. The characterizations are wonderful, the plot advances at a great pace and the sex scenes are hot and don’t take over the plot! Loved it! ( )
