I wasn't able to connect with the characters as I did with all the other Harper books I've read, but it was still a good compelling mystery that kept me guessing. Guessing wrongly, as it turns out in the end but the clues were there if I'd picked up on them.

Audiobook via Audible. Steve Shanahan provided a good performance, but I had trouble at times distinguishing between the characters when it was dialogue-only. ( )

Jane Harper is brilliant and completely at the top of her game. The long wait for her next book is going to be full of suck. ( )

While I had mixed feelings about Harper's Aaron Falk series (I liked the first, not so much the second), this book kept my attention throughout. Harper returns to what she does best with THE SURVIVORS: a compelling small-town atmosphere, rich in detail and brimming with mystery. I liked the Australian landscape, the harshness of the ocean, and the way nature itself feels like a character in this novel.

I particularly appreciated Harper's exploration of relationship dynamics, especially within families. The strength of this book lies in the author's analysis of the aftereffects of grief and the way it impacts everyone differently. In addition, I liked the slower pace of the novel and the fact that it's deeply driven by character explorations and growth.

I'm looking forward to seeing where Jane Harper takes us next! ( )

Not as gripping as the first Jane Harper novels I read.

Slow to start, and then left me with the niggly feeling in the back of my brain tat I had come across a very similar storyline before. Can't remember if it was a book plot line or a TV show.

I was expecting a read as fast paced as the Aaron Folk novels, but I was disappointed. ( )

An amazing story about friendship, loyalty, and secrets set in Evelyn Bay, Australia. The story gushes around water and the timing of tides and features the Elliott family and several other individuals living and working by the sea. The story revolves around a terrible storm twelve years ago in which three people died: two young men and a fourteen-year old girl. Kieran Elliott has always believed that he carries the guilt for the lost lives, and now events draw him to explore what really happened that fateful day. The language flows quietly and savagely like the waves. An iron statue of three survivors from the SS Mary Minerva gauges the severity of the tide among the caves. Bronte, a young woman, is found on the beach, dead. Police, local and from other areas, arrive to aid in the investigation. Secrets emerge. A few red herrings as the police question friends of Bronte. Liam and Brian become the prime suspects, but neither is arrested. The ending surprises the reader. ( )
