Grief is no stranger to me. I know the pain—sharp and biting—lasts for a wrenching moment in time to be replaced by the deep ache of perennial loss. Somewhere in between these two, when hope rears its ephemeral shape, time, motion, and pain stop. Bewildered, I turn to hope—clutch its hem, twist the robes—pleading to the Fates to deny what may be inevitable. All it takes is an act of will to stop the downward spiral. But lack of will is part of the dementia. I dedicate this book to those poor souls whose struggle we look on with horror, tears, and love.
