I found that I did not care for this book as much as the others in the series. First of all there was no Three Pines and the wonderful characters that live there. Secondly, there was too much of everything--too many coincidences, too much angst (I couldn't stand Gamache's whining son, Daniel), too many intersecting storylines, too many really horrible people. I could go on, but I found that I had trouble keeping going through the book. The book is set in Paris, and coincidentally Gamache and his family stumble upon a huge corporate cover-up and corporate misdealings. How in the world can Gamache get caught up in this conspiracy when he is only a visitor in the city? Why is it that the company is only as far away as Beauvoir's new employer. I think I need to take a little break from this series. I've been hitting it pretty hard over the past months. I still love Louise's literate and beautiful writing. I will finish the series, but a little break is required. ( ) This installment of the GThe/Three Pine Mysteries does not take place in Three Pines, but rather in Paris. Therefore, the story lacks the charm of Three Pines and all the eccentric characters of the previous installments such as Ruth, Clara, Gabri, Myrna, etc. But Paris is a beautiful setting for this story that explores history international corporate intrigue. It also fleshes out relationships that were never fully explored in the earlier books. 4 Stars! The Gamache family has gathered in Paris in eager anticipation of the birth of Jean-Guy and Annie’s daughter. A few months earlier, Jean-Guy Beauvoir left his position as head of homicide in Montreal for a job in a private firm in Paris. His father-in-law, Armand Gamache, resumed his former position as head of homicide. A family vacation turns into a busman’s holiday for Gamache when his 93-year-old godfather, Stephen Horowitz, is run down and left for dead on a Paris street. Gamache must figure out the real reason that Stephen came to Paris to keep the rest of his family alive. I should have saved this one for a weekend and lots of uninterrupted reading time. It was hard to put down, maybe because it’s more thriller than police procedural. Gamache is out of his jurisdiction, and his investigative team includes of his librarian wife Reine-Marie, his banker son Daniel, his lawyer daughter Annie. At least his son-in-law, Jean-Guy, has professional experience. The story touches on a lot of themes I love to read about – libraries and archives, art, the Holocaust, and a treasure hunt-like quest. Fellow Reine-Marie fans will be happy that she’s so prominent in this book. I also love that we finally get to know Daniel, who is often mentioned but seldom seen in other books. Armand and Reine-Marie are in Paris, awaiting the birth of Jean-Guy and Annie's baby. The family, even with strained dynamics between Armand and son Daniel, seem delighted to be together, so when Armand's beloved godfather, Stephen Horowitz, is run down after their family dinner, he can't help but be pulled into investigation mode when Stephen's recent life reveals many secrets. The new venue meant I missed some of those favorite characters in Three Pines, but so good to be back in their world. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

The 16th novel by #1 bestselling author Louise Penny finds Chief Inspector Armand Gamache of the Sûreté du Quebec investigating a sinister plot in the City of Light On their first night in Paris, the Gamaches gather as a family for a bistro dinner with Armand's godfather, the billionaire Stephen Horowitz. Walking home together after the meal, they watch in horror as Stephen is knocked down and critically injured in what Gamache knows is no accident, but a deliberate attempt on the elderly man's life. When a strange key is found in Stephen's possession it sends Armand, his wife Reine-Marie, and his former second-in-command at the Sûreté, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, from the top of the Tour d'Eiffel, to the bowels of the Paris Archives, from luxury hotels to odd, coded, works of art. It sends them deep into the secrets Armand's godfather has kept for decades. A gruesome discovery in Stephen's Paris apartment makes it clear the secrets are more rancid, the danger far greater and more imminent, than they realized. Soon the whole family is caught up in a web of lies and deceit. In order to find the truth, Gamache will have to decide whether he can trust his friends, his colleagues, his instincts, his own past. His own family. For even the City of Light casts long shadows. And in that darkness devils hide. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |
