( ) Great opening scene with a girl ( Dinah) shaving off all her hair. She is doing it because something has happened in her life that has caused her to want to run away from the commune where she lives. The first 4 pages were dedicated to the arduous task of cutting and shaving long hair with blunt scissors and a tiny razor. Dinah steps out the front door on her journey to run away and collides with the man who lives next door who has only one leg. He is furious because his prosthetic leg was in the back of a van he was working on that has been stolen. He agrees to pay Dinah to drive an old combi van to where he believes the stolen van has been taken with him across half of Great Britain. And so begins a road trip between a grumpy old man and a girl who wants to disappear. Along the way we have flashbacks into Dinah's life in the commune where she lives with her mother and what went wrong to make Dinah want to be called someone else and disappear. Dinah meets some other "different" people as she drives the Combi into a fence and they need to repair it. Lovely story that Year 8s onwards would enjoy. I read the "hair" part to a Year 8 class and the book was snapped up instantly. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

Dinah was going to go alone and hitch a ride down south. Except, she ends up being persuaded to illegally drive a VW campervan for hundreds of miles, accompanied by a grumpy man with one leg. This wasn't the plan. But while she's driving, Dinah will be forced to confront everything that led her here, everything that will finally show her which direction to turn... In her first YA novel, Costa-shortlisted author Kit de Waal responds to the classic Moby Dick with entirely new characters, a VW campervan, and by tearing the power away from obsessive Captain Ahab and giving it to a teenage girl who's determined to find a new life, far away from her unconventional upbringing.
