In her foreward, Jean-Pierre says it's aimed at younger folks who may be considering a career in politics, but there's plenty for us older folks whose windows of opportunity are not wide open. Sometimes I wish I hadn't been such a late bloomer professionally, because I could have gone in a lot of interesting directions—politics being one of them, maybe. Not that I have any issues with what I'm doing now, but at almost 56 there are a lot of cool options that I'm just not going to have a chance to try out, and Jean-Pierre's enthusiasm for what she does made me a little wistful. Her personality shines through in her writing, and I'm really enjoyed doing the panel with her on it. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione
Part memoir, part how-to, and part progressive political handbook, this book takes the reader on a journey that begins in the Haitian-American enclave in Queens, New York, where Jean-Pierre grew up and ends with her working in the Obama White House. her energy and enthusiasm (she narrates this herself) are refreshing and infectious. the audience for this is primarily younger people who are thinking about getting into politics, but i liked learning more about her personally. her trajectory into the political scene isn't traditional, and it's nice to see someone being successful and encouraging the next generation who doesn't take the usual path.
i'd have liked a little more depth all around. she touches on the things that shaped her but could definitely have gone deeper, even when she gets to the political stuff. i was hoping to get some more stories from her time with the politicians she worked with, especially obama. still, this is an okay read.
