Fun and over the top sweet but isn't that why we all read Ms Easton's books? ( )

4.5 stars

The only small flaw in this book is that Geo is a little bit too perfect. He's not seen showing annoyance, or at least some slight lack of control; something really odd considering his new status as father, stressful situation if there are.

For the rest, funny, heartwarming, and fabulously written —as usual with Easton books—, this is one of my favorite readings of this year so far. ( )

This is exactly what I wanted to read and now I'm sad that's over ( )

Family Camp is the first book in the ‘Daddy Dearest’ series. It stars Geo Anderson, a teacher with two foster kids, and Travis Mayhew, a famous baseball player. The story is told in third person from both Geo’s and Travis’ povs. The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot so I won’t go over that.

I’ll start my review with the cover. I like it. It’s simple but fits the story perfectly.

I rarely ever give a story a five-star rating, but this one deserves it. It has distinctive characters and a plot that proceeds along at a good pace, not rushing or dragging. The story pulled me right in from the beginning and I didn’t want to put it down. I wanted it to be longer even though it was a decent length already. I also don’t remember any obvious grammar or continuity errors. It’s so rare to find a book that is pulled together so well.

I loved the characters. Even the kids, pre-teen Jasper and infant Lucy. They acted like kids would, but didn’t overwhelm the romance part of the plot. If anything, they helped bring Geo and Travis together. The character development for the kids was slow, but it did happen. Geo is a teacher and has the patience of a saint. He has a terrific sense of humor which made him an enjoyable character. He tried so hard to be the perfect foster father but Jasper pretty much always shot him down. Geo was probably the only one who could fit with Travis also. Travis was suspicious of adults except for his family. He didn’t let adults in past his walls. Part of the issue was Travis was in the closet and he didn’t plan to come out of it, maybe, until after he retired from baseball. That is until he met Geo. I could totally believe in the two men as a couple.

For me, Family Camp was a terrific 5 Star read. I’ll likely read this again and I almost never re-read books. I recommend this story to anyone who’s looking for a lighter read about families, but with kids who don’t overwhelm the plot.

A Charming Romance

Certainly, this is not the kind of 5 star book that will become a competitor for a Pulitzer Prize and the overall quality of the writing is too straightforward to carry the nuance and shades of meaning found in other novels, but it is a good read. Romances are pretty much just escapist reading and it is always a bonus when they also happen to be rather good.
What I found especially strong about the book was the characterizations of the behaviors of the two foster children. Their defensive behaviors and acting out absolutely rang true. Children who had experienced what they had would have few other options.
The story of the relationship between the two MC’s developed well, was interesting, and, most of all, credible and believable.
Overall, it was an enjoyable book and better than many written with higher aims in mind yet failing to achieve them.
This M/M romance hits the target. ( )
