This was one of those books that make you feel happy, for lack of a better explanation. It's a cute story with just the right amount of sweetness, humour, and angsting (or I suppose it's better to say stressing, lol). Joel, a very self-conscience guy goes on a Christmas cruise with his family. What he doesn't know is that it's a gay-friendly cruise and the sole purpose of the family is to find him a boyfriend. It's also not known that the ship (rumoured to be the old "Love Boat" from the TV series) is a safehaven for paranormals. One of these, Nathan, the ship's photographer, is one of these. Part incubus, but mostly human, when Nathan spots Joel in the background of a photo he takes, he feels to him and has to get to know him. The story isn't about fated mates, just plain old "instant attraction". It's told in a lovely manner and I'm truly hoping that there will be more stories in this series, as I'd love to read more about this magical ship and the shenanigans on board. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

I enjoyed this book. It made me laugh and the characters were interesting.
The blurb does a good job of explaining the plot so I’ll only go over it a little. This cruise ship is an LGBTQ friendly cruise ship. It’s also paranormal creature friendly, but the humans on board don’t know that, they just think the passengers like to dress up a lot. The ship’s captain is a demigod, and his husband is fae. The ship itself is considered a ‘Love Boat’ and seems to have a mind of its own. Josh’s parents paid for the cruise for their whole family and Josh’s best friend, with the purpose of finding Josh a boyfriend on the cruise.
I liked the human characters and the paranormal ones too. There’s Josh’s meddling mother with her mistletoe, a brother and his wife trying to get pregnant, a sister whose husband is away in the military, and Josh’s best friend who just wants to get laid. All the characters were well done. Josh and Nathan were a believable couple. Josh and Nathan had their insecurities. Josh believed himself boring and Nathan tried hard to live down his demon past. Nathan is one-quarter incubus and until he learned to control it, it controlled him. Other paranormals on the ship still consider him a demon rather than mostly human. Nathan believes that Josh would never accept him if he knew he was part demon. I thought there was too much repetition of the two men’s insecurities. It felt like the insecurities were used to lead into some behavior Josh or Nathan would do to push them apart. I didn’t feel I needed to be reminded of their insecurities each time that happened.
I found the first chapter slow reading, but it picked up after that. The plot is not fast paced, it’s just about Josh and Nathan gradually getting to know each other. The added element of the paranormals in the background kept the plot interesting and the hints all around the humans, that the humans didn’t notice. There’s a paranormal incident that occurs which is interesting, and when Josh and Nathan finally have sex, it’s explosive, more so because Josh is a virgin and that is like sweet nectar to Nathan’s demon.
Other than the slow pace of the first chapter, I liked The Boyfriend Cruise and I’d recommend it to others. I don’t normally reread stories, but I can see myself rereading this one at some point. I give this book, 4 Stars.
