According to the afterword, this is set in 1940. The Judy Lane of the title is in the rebuilt Roulsville. It's almost Christmas. Judy is Christmas shopping, some of it at Franklin Stationery Shop, which is across the street from Peter Dobbs' law office. Judy is her fiancé's secretary. She already knew Ruth and Dow Piper, as well as their son, Algernon, better known as 'Algie,' and daughter, Clara, from book 11, The Unfinished House. Now Judy gets to meet Dow's mother, Ella Piper, who is Peter's new client. (
