It so perfectly captures the glory of both watching a wonderful bout, being in the middle of a thrilling fight, and confronting the ugliness that trauma and adrenaline can bring to the fore. Loved that it was a woman swordsperson who inspires the tale, and the tie in to the Red Company. Side story - an army guy who encountered the Red Company early on in their careers, and it changed things for them and for him. Great story, and another look at Scholar Black… I always love this. Just one more tiny story - if Victoria wrote every day for years she'd never run out of stories. And Pali never mentioned this - just another day, to her, while she was busy packing. Lovely. nessuna recensione | aggiungi una recensione

The greatest poet of the Empire of Astandalas was widely considered the infamous outlaw Fitzroy Angursell. Almost all of his poems and songs were banned, but that had the tendency merely to encourage everyone to read them. Hilarious, pointed, and scathingly topical, one of the games of all levels of society was to guess who they were truly about. After the Fall of the Empire, both the songs and the old stories are still sung, still illegal, and still a mixed blessing. It was not until his nephew tried to impress him that Zorey, formerly a soldier of the Emperor, finally told the story of how he got the scar on his face and earned the dubious gift of Fitzroy Angursell's particular brand of immortality. His nephew wasn't expecting the story. Zorey wasn't expecting the response. Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

I expected a more straightforward telling, so having an old soldier recount his tale was an unexpected surprise, as was the return of another familiar character. It's not my favorite story in the world, it felt too disconnected from most of the characters I know & love. But I'll read anything Victoria Goddard writes at this point, and it's always a pleasure to see what else she can do. ( )
