Tropical regions aren't all palm-fringed beaches: they span some of what we think of as Australia's drier regions, proving that they are so much more than 'lush and warm.' Renowned photographer Nick Rains puts the rich diversity of Australia's tropics on spectacular display in this collection of photographs. Lens by lens, click by click, the photographs in Tropical Australia encourage us to get out and explore the vast and beautiful scenery of Australia's tropical places, from the glistening coastlines and forests of Queensland to the wet-season waters of the Kimberley in Western Australia. There are many instances of double page spreads of photos throughout this book. It is pretty clear that Rains wants the photos to speak for themselves rather than include lots of text - which he manages to achieve very well.
I was particularly impressed with the photo he chose to include for Western Australia. WA is known for its rugged and very red mountains and the photo Rains included here captures that spectacularly. The photo was of the Mitchell Falls in the Kimberley. I could look at this one photo for ages. The ragged cliff edges are so well defined it does something to the heart strings. ( )
