"On April 10th, 1815, Indonesia's Mount Tambora erupted. A build-up of ash in the stratosphere altered weather patterns and lead, in 1816, to a year without a summer. Instead, there were June snowstorms, food shortages, epidemics, inventions, and the proliferation of new cults and religious revivals. These linked lyrical essays chart the events and effects of the apocalyptic year following the eruption. Weaving history, fairytale, mythology, and memoir, Rachel Lebowitz ruminates on our interaction with weather and the natural world, motherhood, transformation, war, the human appetite for destruction, and our search for God and meaning in times of disaster."-- Non sono state trovate descrizioni di biblioteche |

Unfortunately, that's not what I got.
There are long, meandering passages about her experience of being pregnant, for what reason god alone knows, and interesting and gruesome facts about every kind of disaster she has facts for, from WWI to other volcanic eruptions to earthquakes to disease outbreaks, with the transitions so disjointed that I couldn't even be sure what disaster I was reading about at any given time. What was the point of this? I'm not even sure what information in there was about the volcanic eruption in question, it was so unclear to me what subject she was writing on at any given time. ( )
