Loved it for a while, then abruptly got bored about 80% in, which should have been the big exciting part. But man, I just finished it to finish it. Not expecting to read the next in a hurry. ( )

*I got this book for review from the publisher for my honest thoughts*

I really enjoyed this read. I thought it was the prefect mix between realistic science fiction and thriller. I also thought this book handle topics like clones and prejudice and it was a super compelling read. I also was invested in the various mysteries that were presented in this novel. I found this to be a super fast pace read overall. I did like the focus on friendship and mysteries. I also thought the end of the book was fast pace adventure and really enjoyed it. I also liked the focused on the science in the novel.

I thought this book also handled grief and the the ending twists were super shocking and def. need to read book 2. ( )

I found the main character unlikeable in the extreme, due to her overdramatic stream of consciousness. It took everything I had to keep reading the book, because who knew what madness would transpire next?!?!?? (Spoiler alert, very little happens, except for half baked plot reveals that struggle to be compelling. The most interesting thing that happened in the whole book was her best friend getting attacked in the boathouse and that was a complete red herring that never went anywhere.) The whole book is like that, and it’s irritating. Almost as irritating as the constant assurance that the school is one of the most progressive around, even when there is absolutely no evidence to back this up at any time. I kept waiting for the plot to make sense, for the big reveal to be revealed, and instead we get an acid trip of a VR ride, that somehow reveals how our narrator has an especially strong and fascinating mind. Meh. It was a first book. I hope her future books are better.

Technology has advanced, allowing human cloning. When six human clones show up to a private school in Vermont, Emma freaks out. Everyone freaks out. One of them is a copy of her best friend Oliver, who died over the summer. So many smart questions were raised about the ethical questions of cloning, the rights of clones, inclusion, and the need to protect minors from the media, etc.

This was a fun, entertaining book with a cool sci-fi edge and lots of twists. What really works about this one is the pacing, which gets off to a quick start and doesn’t relent, and the fact that it asks smart questions. An enjoyable read!

Trigger Warnings: suicidal ideation, prescription drug abuse, hazing
