A little French boy and his mother travel out of Paris to visit the boy's grandfather, who he knows is old, quiet, and "a little bit shy." But the first thing that happens is that the dog, George, who is "not one bit old or quiet," steals the boys hat and runs through the house. In this way, Henri discovers a trunk full of hats, which he tries on one after another, making up imaginary games to go with each (pilot, deep-sea diver, circus ringmaster, etc.). When Henri's grandfather finds him, Henri is afraid he might be in trouble, but his grandfather joins in with his games. "I realize now that we are not so different, Papa and I, except most of his adventures are behind him, and mine are still ahead."
